Due to the massive popularity of digital cameras the PictureMate
personal photo lab has been aimed at providing a home printing solution.
So how successful it?, well currently there is the 100 and 500 versions
of the PictureMate. Both provide easy one-touch printing of 4 x
6 inch photos. The 100 version previewed here is able to produce
pictures with 5760 x 1440 optimised dpi (Dots Per Inch (DPI), more
detailed the image). So how do you use it?, all you need to do is
insert the memory card from your digital camera and connect it to
the Epson by the USB port/cable. The Epson's strong point is that
it supports virtually all flash memory cards. Once everything is
hooked up the PictureMate offers a range of ways you crop and resize
your pictures. The beauty is you do not a computer to do this, so
it's simplified the process for those wanting quick and easy prints.
The 100 model we tried allows for black, white and sepia tones,
and for prints without borders. You can also produce images that
are wallet size. However you will need PictureMate Photo Paper to
start printing with. The Epson Picturemate photo cartridge and 100
sheets of paper currently retails around £30. I think the
PictureMate 100 is a great idea and priced around £80 is fairly
cost effective. The professional photo labs may not like it, but
I am sure the amateur photographer will love it.
