TFT Monitors

TFT stands for 'Thin-Film Transistor' and is a technology that has helped improve desktop space and improve the image quality of computer monitors. TFT is in fact a form of LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screen, and is similar to flat panel television displays and projectors. Before TFT monitors the CRT technology was king, but CRT lost the battle because of the picture quality and the actual size and depth of the technology as shown below,

TFT monitors can also come in sizes up to 32 inches, whereas CRT was largely limited to a smaller screen size. A TFT display is constructed with a large number of pixels that require millions of connections, with each pixel including a red, green and blue section. The pixels are organised in rows and columns and are driven by either a positive or negative voltage. The pixels also have a transparent ITO layer at the front and back, with insulating liquid crystal between the two layers. TFT is an expensive technology to develop, some screens manufactured always suffer from back light evenness, dead pixels and poor product quality. These screens are usually sold to low level OEM vendors. Whereas the 'professional' grade monitors are reserved for companies like Sharp, Samsung and Philips.
