Currently priced around £1,500 Asus W5F is a high end laptop
which is upgradeable and has lots of features. On a test run it
ran almost anything thrown at it (exceptions being one of the more
graphic intensive 3D games). There are not many other would similar
priced laptops I would trade this for. I ran a range of operating
systems on it like Linux, Windows NT, and XP Professional and it
did a faultless job on each. The spec is top notch but the build
quality was a little flimsy, the screen hinge cover broke off and
need to be replaced (it was a simply job if still a pain). The DVD
playback was also a little bit noisy and the speakers on the notebook
are a little small for my liking. There was no noise however from
the HDD as it was whisper quiet (which was a pleasant change from
my desktop). Sadly like most CD/DVD drives it did emit a high pitched
squeal when reading and writing on CD-R and CD-RWs. The fan like
the HDD is also very quiet and doesn't bother you at all. This will
increase when you are playing games continuously because of the
extra heat produced by the onboard graphics cards. The wireless
network also has its own on/off button which helps save a lot of
power when not in use. At work I found the battery life was above
average, running above 2 and a half hours. Overall an impressive
notebook, well worth considering.
