After years of pressure Dell finally succumbed and have begun to
sell a selection of laptops with Linux pre-installed. To-date red
hat and ubunto are the only distros available.
The problem is that users in the UK are complaining about the difficulty
of purchasing a pre-installed Linux laptop from the Dell website.
The links and information are well hidden, a site search for 'Linux'
provides links for XP machines.
There appears to be a real reluctance on Dell's part to promote
Linux. Not surprising you may say, Dell and Microsoft are close
partners, and Dell have one of Microsoft's Original Equipment Manufacturer
(OEM) agreements.
Perhaps Dell are a little scared of upsetting MS, worried that
their price per shipment of Windows may rise.
In response to the criticism Dell have created quite a few offshoot
sites to promote Linux. There is now a Linux section at Dell's forum,
providing an environment for customers to interact, discuss, ask
questions, and share experiences.

Dell should be commended for being one of the first major vendors
to ship Linux with their machines. It's been a long and rocky road
for the Linux community to get support like this. I am not surprised
by Dell's reluctance, Linux can be complicated, support is next
to nowhere, compatibility with alot of software nil. My hope is
that in 5-10 yrs Linux will evolve to compete with Windows on every
front, at the moment it does not, everyone supporting this evolution
of Linux should be applauded.
