Picture,
Screen Size, What you get for your money
Reliability
is extremely suspect.
I decided to jump on the band wagon and buy myself a huge 40+ inch
tv, after browsing through some which? (a source I trust) pdf reviews
posted on the web this TV from Toshiba came out well. It got either
4 or 5 stars and the editor rated the picture quality as equal to
most plasma screen's on the market.
This was about 14 months ago, the plasma's were £3000 and
this model was £1200. Since then the price of plasma's had
decreased and I would not make the same decision again. I ordered
from a company from Birmingham and found them through an online
price comparison engine. It was delivered in 2 days and I was a
happy bunny.
It comes with a well built attractive stand and the whole package
looked good value for £1200 - even though it was a little
too big for my living room. You really do need about 3 meter's distance
from the screen to view it at it's best. The picture and sound were
excellent and met my expectations, the overall feel and build quality
of the plastics etc. do feel a little cheap however.
Downsides? well there is no switch to turn it off. There is a touch
thumb panel underneath the screen which just puts the TV on stand
by. It also takes around a minute to warm up and achieve it's premium
picture quality. You can also only view the picture perfectly from
a straight on angle. If you are stood up or viewing from the right
or left the picture will blur and darken.
On some dvd's like constantine the blacks in some shots were very
blurry also which was a let down, but a year later when viewing
the film again it had disappeared and the black viewed perfectly.
With time the picture quality seems to improve.
Therefore if I left the review at this point I would give it 4
stars and be relatively content with my decision. Sadly this isn't
the case.
The reliability of this rear projection set is extremely suspect
from my experience. After six months use the picture went to just
shades of greens and required the retailer to pick it up and repair
it under the one year warranty.
Last Sunday evening I was happily watching a movie when a moderate
click/clank noise occurred and the screen went blank. Now the screen
is permanently blank with only the sound playing. Sadly my warranty
has passed and I will need to repair it out of my own pocket. I've
decided not to bother, I assume it will just wrong again. I am planning
to give it away to a family member who is willing to risk repairing
it and maybe only getting another 6 months of functional television.
If you do decide to buy this TV then make sure you buy a long warranty
for it.
