Well built and solid. Producing plenty of sound out of such small speakers.
Not much.

What an excellent slimline machine this is, especially for the price. I would hesitate to recommend this for anyone looking for a midi hifi to place in a bedroom or kitchen. There is only twenty watts on offer so do not expect the sound quality to fill a larger room.

Size, Price.
A fault occured after a few months.

This stereo was exactly what we were searching for. Purchased primarility for the radio, it began to lose it's reception after five to fifteen minutes. We returned it on warranty and swapped it for another model. The new system was a 'Sony CMT-NEZ50' our main criteria again was for a stereo which would fit in a limited space, ideally on a shelf. As a compact unit the Sony's sound quality is very good and superior to the Hitachi in all honesty. Recently we have used it in a conservatory, we do not have a MP3 or i-Pod but have been informed it supports both these features. The radio presets were fiddly to set up however, and the LCD meant it was difficult to scroll through all of our stated presets to find the one we required. The Sony system seems a step up, I would recommend this reputable company over Hitachi.

25 watts output from such a tiny system is pretty impressive, lots of bass as well!
Bland design, the blue LCD panel looks tacky.

I was looking for a hi-fi for my son's birthday, and was looking to spend around about 50 quid. I didn't want to get one of those totally crappy brands like Bush or Goodmans, with their low rent plasticy hi-fi's. But at my price range their wasn't much to pick from, the shop assistant said Hitachi were a better brand than the said companies and more reliable, and with 25Watts it should sound fine in a bedroom. So far my son seems very content with it, he's only eight years old and thinks the blue lights are cool and it does appear very solidly built. I had my reseveryions in-store because it did look very bland and boring.

sound is good
Poor screen only visible from above. no batteries included for remote sent the following message.
Reason

This was a replacement for a goodmans usb hifi which was excellent but the usb port stopped working and the retailer did not stock that model any more the goodmans replacements were not nearly so nice sounding. The hitachi was £10 quid more, when I got it home found the screen was only viewable from above. Replaced it, new unit better but still poor screen display compared to the cheaper goodmans. Sound quality is ok although slight distortion evident at hi volume.

This is the first piece of equipment in three years i have purchased that has not had batteries included for the remote - cheapskate hitachi!

Note some usb players check for DRM before playing which can be frustrating when your equipment refuses to play your tracks because it has decided you don't have the right this one seemed ok
