Camcorders
Over the past decade camcorders have become smaller, lighter and simplier
to use. With the advent of personal computers in most homes it has become
easier to edit your home movies with various software packages. Camcorders
are also producing better pictures and sound, long gone are the grainy
images seen on 'You've Been Framed'. Below is a list of common terms.
- Optical zoom - Magnifies the subject so it appears closer to the camera.
- Digital zoom - This just enlarges the subject image digitally on film.
Results is lower picture quality.
- Long play - Doubles the recording time on camcorders which use cassettes.
- White balance - This feature automatically alters the camcorder when
used in a natural or artificial light setting. Hopefully ensures that
the correct colour is producted.
- PCM digital sound - Produces high quality audio.
- Memory card slot - Stores still images onto memory card for easy transportation.
- Recording formats,
- Digital 8 - earliest of digital formats and exclusive to Sony.
- MiniDV - records digitally onto compact cassettes.
- MicroMV - Sony version of MiniDV.
- DVD - records directly onto DVD.
