Sony DAV-DZ230

Technical Details: 850 watts rms output, one scart and hdmi socket, upscales to 720P/1080, 5.1 Channels Dolby Digital

Features: DTS Digital Surround Sound and Dolby Pro Logic II supported, MP3 / JPEG playback, Bravia THEATRE Sync,

Pros: Increased performance when sync'd with a Bravia enabled Sony screen. HDMI upscaling is supported for the picture, combined with 5.1 and DTS sound it's a crowd pleasing performance.

Cons: Lacks a input for phono. Has a shortage of connection sockets, includes just a single scart and HDMI connection. This is a problem if you need to split the HDMI connection into more than one output, ie a tv and an amp. The wire length for the front speakers is shorter than for the rear speakers, for those of us who like to experiment it becomes a pain to swap around the wires for the speakers.

Verdict: Make sure you have an amplifier which will play sound from hdmi, you will need a separate digital output than just your dvd player. Apart from the lack of connection input/output sockets it's a solid performer which will not disappoint.

No idea!
The lack of sockets was enough to put me off, opted for the Yamaha AV61 - comes with 3 x component video / 1 x video loop / 2 x video in / component video / monitor outputs. With 2 x optical / 1 x coaxial digital inputs it covers all bases.

No cinema set offers a HDMI connection and performance to match for cost.
Sound likes the sparkle of my old system, lack of audio inputs make it difficult to customise beyond the standard settings outlined in the user supplied manual.

Certainly the best picture quality I have viewed from a home dvd player, superb hdmi upscaling. Only let down by sound inputs. Still represents excellent value.
