Quiet
operation, cheap, records in super format so editing on a PC is
easier.
Dual
layer disks are not supported.
The HD upscaling is disappointing, even considering what I paid
for the machine. Installation process was idiot proof, we were up
and running within ten minutes. I had purchased a box of dual layer
discs, guess I'll have to sell them on eBay, luckily I have lots
of cds and single layer dvds.
Having owned this recorder for a week now I can recommend it for
the following reasons. I did spent quite alot time researching various
machines, this was the list following features I required:
1) HDMI output
2) 1080p upscaling - it plays and upsclaes to HDMI 720p/1080.
3) S-Video and iLink so I can upload and camera and camcorder footage
to and from DVD
4) To get all the free sky channels - Digital Freeview tuner
5) Decent size hard disk, I tend to record a large volume of my
fav shows
It has provided all the things I required, alongside a setup and
user interface which is fool proof. I still haven't read up on all
the advanced features available. I really need to look into how
to record and archive my camcorder footage. I have not needed to
invest in a fan cooled device, samsung have done a good job of lowering
the levels of ambient noise (like a PC).

The functionality and controls took over a week to get used to,
it was quite a transition from my vcr. The manual was pretty sparce
with information, but you do find a few hints and nuggets to give
a noob like me an idea. The performance is silent and impressive,
I also made the mistake of buying some dual layer disks. The menu
for selecting which programme to record from the TV is clear, and
although the appearance is boring and dull, it's easy to pick what
you've recorded. The style/design of the actal unit is ok, a rear
USB port would have helped, overall I'm pleased with it.
