DVD Players
They first went on sale in the UK around 1997/98. Since then it has slowly
replaced the video cassette recorder in most homes, and forced retailers
like Dixons to take VHS recorders off their selves. The reason for this
turn around is the massive increase in picture and sound quality. And
unlike VHS tapes DVD's don't degrade in quality everytime you use them.
And with the introduction of DVD recorders the last useful feature of
video recorders was lost. Below are common dvd terms,
- Multi-regions - Some dvds and players are set up only to play for
certain regions. These regions are as follows. Zone 1 - USA, Canada.
Zone 2 - Europe, South Africa, Japan, Middle East. Zone 3 - South Korea,
Hong Kong, Taiwan. Zone 4 - Australia, New Zealand, Latin America. Zone
5 - Africa, India, Asia. Zone 6 - China.
- Certain players can only play certain DVD formats. Common formats
include DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW and DVD Ram.
- Optical connection - This connection allows for production of Dolby
Digital 5.1 and DTS.
- 5.1 channel audio outputs - This produces dolby digital via surround
sound systems by speakers on the: Left, Right, Center channel, Rear
Left, Rear Right and a Subwoofer.
- Connections between a DVD player and a television includes Component
video, S-video connection, Scart, Analog RCA connections and Audio connectors.
