Home > DVD Recorders DVD RecordersDVD Recorders are the next generation of DVD technology. Unlike a DVD player a recorder is able to not only play DVD discs but also to burn data onto them. They were first available for purchase in 1999, but due to it's price of £2000 there were few takers. Only in 2004-06 did they become a mass market item when prices were slashed to around £250. Most of the modern recorders feature support for all the major formats like DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, and DVD+R DL, and include a hard disk (like a home computer) to store data (like television programmes) which to burn from. It now looks like the video recorder will soon become exstinct, with DVD recorders able to offer improved video and audio quality, DVD discs are easier to handle and store, DVD's offer chapters so no need for rewind / fast-forward, you can edit adverts out of recordings and the discs themselves do not degrade the same as VCR tapes during playback. Some drawbacks on older and low end recorders include the difficulty of formating the disc for recording, having to finalise the disc to view in other DVD players, and the lack of a hard disk based "digital video recorder" can make recording to large disks difficult. |
