Home Cinema Systems

A typical home cinema system includes four parts,

  • 1) AV Receiver
  • 2) 5 way speaker system
  • 3) Subwoofer
  • 4) DVD Player
Although as time passes some systems include an integrated AV and DVD separate.

Named either a home cinema or theater system (usually cinema in the UK, and theater in the US). They aim to replicate cinema quality sound and visuals for the home. The introduction of DVD quality sound and visuals was the kick starter for this revolution. DVDs support the sound systems 'Dolby Pro Logic' and 'Digital Theatre System (DTS)' which are both used in commercial cinema's. Many manufacturers soon twigged onto the fact many consumers had a strong desire to equal their cinema experiences in their homes. They soon packaged DVD players with an AV receiver and speakers capable of handling Dolby and DTS. These products came to be known as a 'home cinema system'. In a typical home cinema system an AV receiver is the audio receiver whose primary purpose is to amplify sound from the routed video signals from either a DVD player, VCR or TV. The vast majority of AV receivers support Dolby Pro Logic and Digital Theatre System (DTS) which are the stereo signals used in cinema's and by DVD discs. With the development of DVD, 5-channel audio became available, and this is where a five speaker system comes into play, with a subwoofer for low-frequency effects.
