LCD Televisions

LCD is short for "liquid crystal display", and is a fairly new technology for televisions. The advantage of LCD compared to the traditional CRT technology is it's thin and flat display, uses small amounts of electricity and the sharpness of it's picture. Like with Plasma the LCD display is made up by a vast number of color or monochrome pixels. The pixels in a LCD display work by suspending molecules between two electrodes and polarizing filters, and with the aid of liquid crystals allows light to pass through. When an electrical charge is applied to the above the structure works in such a way as to allow varying amounts of light in each pixel, correspondingly illuminating the whole screen into a picture. Because an LCD screen do not require a lamp unlike a traditional CRT or rear projection screen it reduces power consumption by a significant amount. LCD does however have some notable disadvantages compared to plasma and CRT, it can only display crisply in a few standard resolutions, has a lower contrast ratio, slower response for fast moving images and a limited viewing angle. All of these things are becoming less of a problem as the LCD technology advances however.
