The famous Sony Walkman range has now entered the mp3 market dominated
by the Apple iPod brand. The new NW-A1000 model from Sony comes
in a stylish silver case comes and for under £145 is competitively
priced. With 6GB of storage space it's competing against the Creative
Zen Micro and previous Apple iPod Mini and is priced at the same
cost. 6Gb. Everything else included is pretty standard such as MP3
and WMA playback, direct USB plug, USB 2.0 connection, Other features
In-Ear style earphones included and PC and Mac compatible. I did
find that the software could be better, because it is only possible
to navigate songs if the song info is properly downloaded. For roughly
10% of the first transfer this did not happen. Also because the
NW-A1000 uses a higher bitrate of 200 it really means less battery
power and space of course. The Zen Micro has more features and the
iPod has more kudos. So Sony will have a hard task winning over
iPod and Zen fans. In the style stakes it's no match for the 'iPod'.
Sony can only hope that they famous 'walkman' brand and popularity
as a quality brand will bring sales. The NW-A1000 does nothing that
isn't already on the market. But if all your friends have iPods
and you want to prove to them that there is a good alternative then
maybe the Sony will fit the bill.

This is an outstanding MP3. More than a mere alternative to an
iPod, this really does kick its ass. So what if the software is
different to the iPod, this doesnt make it any harder to use, just
different. Once you have taken off the annoying sound limiter (Imposed
by EU regulations) this is a thumping sound player, the sound quality
is something alone that Sony should and will be proud of. I am genuinely
glad that I sold my Nano and stopped following the crowd. Dont be
a sheep, check it out.

Looking to replace my Sony MD walkman MZ-NH900, had for just under
2 year use it 5 days a week for approx 8hr a day, worn it out. Its
been a very good player. All the reviews for this player (6Gb and
8Gb) are all +ve except for when it comes to the sofeware (sonic
stage) all I can say is that I have never had any problems with
it and neither have my children. We now use version 4.2 and since
I built a new PC it transfers fast. I will be buying a NW-A1000.
