Rear Projection Televisions

Until recently with the introduction of plasma and LCD nearly every large screen available to purchase for the general public TVs used rear/back projection technology. There are three common types of projection technology which is CRT, LCD and DLP. It's called rear projection because the image is projected and reflected from behind onto the screen, which is the opposite of the traditional movie projector placed in front of the screen. Still costing a good deal less (2007) inch for inch than plasma, projection screens and in particular DLP which uses a reflective micromirror chip are still widely for sale. But likewise with the VHS recorder, the writing seems on the wall for all types of projection based TVs. Even with DLP chips the major problem with projection televisions is they have not been able to match the image sharpness of CRT, Plasma and especially LCD screens. Having said that the current models have vastly improved their picture sharpness compared to the models of yesteryear, and still offer a cost-effective way to own a large-screen display.
