Hifi Systems

Hifi is short for 'High fidelity' and is a standard sound system launched in the 1970's which aimed to achieve a minimal amount of noise, frequency response and distortion. The goal of high fidelity is still to continue the advance of sound reproduction, whether as a system of separate devices or an integrated music centre. The integrated Hifi system, sometimes referred to an a mini, micro, midi system depending on size dimensions began with the inclusion of a phono, tuner, tape cassette deck and amplifier. This advanced to contain a CD player, and occasionally a 3-10 disc CD changer, equalizers, hard drive to store music, DAB tuner or MiniDisc. The integrated Hifi system is usually disparaged by hifi enthusiasts, because they usually fail to equal the quality of a system built from separate components. Integrated Hifi systems also lack the flexibility to upgrade piece-by-piece from different manufacturers at the wim of the owner, and the ability of creating a system of just core components. So what advantages are there to an integrated system? the price is usually lower and can be sub-£40, unheard of for separates. The size is another benefit, with micro system containing dimensions a fraction the size of separates. And finally the looks of an intergrated system are sometimes preferred, with high end integrated systems from the likes of Bang & Olufsen sometimes suiting comtempory living rooms better than a stack of separates.
